How an Engagement Works

A practical, flexible process for understanding the problem, defining priorities, and moving into implementation.

01

Introductory Call

We start with a 30-minute call to discuss your application, workflow, data, or engineering challenge.

The goal is to understand your needs, answer initial questions, and determine whether I am a good fit for the work.

The introductory call is complimentary.

02

Discovery & Assessment

If we decide to move forward, I begin with a focused discovery and assessment.

Depending on the engagement, this may include reviewing the application, codebase, architecture, integrations, data flows, workflows, or engineering processes.

The goal is to understand the current state, key constraints, risks, and opportunities for improvement.

Discovery work is billed hourly.

03

Findings & Recommendations

I organize the findings into clear, prioritized recommendations based on business priorities, technical risk, effort, and expected value.

Recommendations may include technical improvements, modernization opportunities, workflow changes, integrations, or process improvements.

04

Scope & Implementation Plan

If you want to continue into implementation, we define the next phase of work.

We agree on priorities, break the work into manageable increments, and establish an expected range of effort.

The plan can evolve as we learn more, while keeping priorities and costs visible.

05

Implementation & Collaboration

I can implement the work directly or work alongside your existing engineering team.

Depending on the engagement, this may include application development, modernization, refactoring, integrations, data pipelines, testing, automation, documentation, or engineering process improvements.

Work is completed incrementally, with regular communication around progress, priorities, risks, and next steps.

Flexible, Hourly Consulting

Consulting work is billed hourly, allowing the scope to adapt as the work evolves.

Before beginning a phase of work, I provide an expected range of effort when possible and communicate before significantly exceeding that range.
